Community Involvement
MCNR is deeply committed to supporting our region through active participation and involvement in all facets of community life.
Professional Development
MCNR plays a leadership role in developing the next generation of healthcare professionals from educational institutions including Yale University, University of Connecticut, Norwich Technical School, Goodwin College and Quinebaug Valley Community College.
MCNR is a clinical rotation site for RN, LPN, CNA, occupational therapist assistant students, speech therapy, and is a preceptor site for physical therapy, therapeutic recreation and speech therapy students. The rehabilitation department provides opportunities for students to observe physical and occupational therapists at work, fulfilling academic observation requirements.
Community Education
MCNR nurses help to educate patients and families at regional hospitals including Windham and Backus about congestive heart failure (CHF), one of the leading causes of avoidable hospital readmissions. Our staff is in demand and available to speak on a variety of topics including:
- Pneumonia Signs and Symptoms
- Flu Season Precautions
- Depression in the Elderly
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Advanced Directives
Community Outreach
MCNR’s ongoing participation in a wide variety of community outreach programs keeps our connections with the community strong and vibrant. We are a vital presence throughout the community:
- At regional health fairs, offering free screenings and healthy lifestyle literature
- At local high schools, giving students the chance to ‘job shadow’ to learn more about opportunities in healthcare
- At senior centers, providing educational and entertaining programs
- At local events, supporting the growth and celebrating the success of our partners in the healthcare community
- Through our volunteer programs

Our staff members are actively involved in leadership roles throughout the community, holding board positions at:

Community Support
MCNR employees, residents and families have supported numerous fundraising events to benefit:
- No Freeze Shelters (Diana’s House, Holy Family)
- Pillows for Preemies for the Hartford Hospital Neonatal Unit
- Young Parents Program
- DARE
- Ashford Food Program
- Women’s Auxiliary

UCONN Connection
MCNR has a special relationship with our close neighbor, the University of Connecticut. Our connections are multi-faceted, providing opportunities that enrich lives in both of our communities.
- UCONN Honor Society - a partnership to provide opportunities for community volunteerism
- UCONN Generations Connect - supports student and resident programming
- UCONN fraternities and sororities – work with therapeutic recreation staff
- UCONN Center for Community Outreach - partners with therapeutic recreation department to provide inter-generational programming for residents
- Free audiology clinic provided by speech therapy department and students from UCONN
